Police are searching for a man who may be able to assist with enquiries into an alleged sexual assault early this morning in Cairns.

Initial information indicates sometime between 3 and 4.30am a woman was walking back to her accommodation when she became lost near the intersection of Grafton and Aplin Streets, Cairns.

The woman asked a man in the area for directions when he allegedly took her to a park near the intersection of Florence and Sheridan Streets and sexually assaulted her.

The offender then ran away and the woman managed to flag down a passing security patrol who alerted police.

Police are searching for a man (pictured) described as of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island appearance, in his late 20’s to late 30’s in age, with a fat build and approximately 175 to 180cms tall.

It is believed he was wearing a red t-shirt with white writing on the front, dark coloured long pants and a blue cap at the time.
