A man is in a critical condition after allegedly being stabbed by another man in Aitkenvale overnight.

Initial investigations indicate police found a 40-year-old man suffering three stab wounds to the thigh and upper abdomen and lying on the medium strip on Ross River Road, near the intersection of Elizabeth Street just after 2am.

It is believed the man was approached at the location by an unknown man, who demanded he hand over his property. The victim refused and was allegedly stabbed by the offender.

The man was taken to hospital where he is currently undergoing surgery.

The offender is described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in appearance. Police are seeking public assistance from anyone with information which could assist with their investigations to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
